# Forest Lawn Glendale: Visiting Michael Jackson's Grave (An Honest 2026 Guide)

Visiting Michael Jackson's grave is unlike any other fan pilgrimage in the world. Unlike Père Lachaise with Jim Morrison or Strawberry Fields with Lennon, at Forest Lawn Glendale you do not reach the grave. You come close. You stop. You pay respect.

The Great Mausoleum, where Holly Terrace houses MJ's private crypt, has been closed to the ordinary public since 1933. There is no line, no opening window, no ticket for sale. There is a special pass granted to family and to visitors authorized by Forest Lawn, and that is that. Anyone arriving expecting to see MJ's plaque will leave frustrated if they are not prepared.

This guide was written so you don't have that frustration. You will understand what you can do, how to leave a tribute that reaches the family, and how to turn the day into something bigger: an MJ circuit through Los Angeles covering everything from the Walk of Fame to the Capitol Records building where "Off The Wall" was mixed.

---

### Why Holly Terrace is off-limits to the public

**TL;DR**: Holly Terrace inside the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Glendale has been closed to the general public since 1933 by decision of the Eaton family (the park's owners). Access is restricted to family of the interred, special-pass holders authorized by Forest Lawn, and authorized staff. The rule is the same for MJ, Clark Gable and Jean Harlow.

The rule was not created because of MJ. The Great Mausoleum opened in 1933 already with restricted access, modeled on the aristocratic European cemeteries that Hubert Eaton (Forest Lawn's founder) admired. The idea was to preserve the sacred, private character of the crypts and avoid predatory tourism on the deceased.

When Michael Jackson was interred on September 3, 2009, two and a half months after his death on June 25, his family chose Holly Terrace precisely for that protection. The exact crypt location is not disclosed — there is no public map with the niche number. Forest Lawn staff are instructed not to confirm specifics to the media or to fans.

Trying to bypass the rules (slipping in behind a procession, posing as a funeral guest) leads to being banned from the park and, in repeated cases, a court restraining order. In 2010 and 2014 there were documented cases of fans who tried to enter the Great Mausoleum and were detained by Forest Lawn security before Glendale police arrived.

The rule is simple: you are not going inside. Accept that before you call the Uber.

### What is accessible inside Forest Lawn Glendale

**TL;DR**: Visitors have free access to the outdoor gardens, to the approach area of the Great Mausoleum (facade), to the Court of Freedom, the Wee Kirk o' the Heather, the Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection (the only religious artwork open to visitors), and to the outdoor graves of Walt Disney, Sammy Davis Jr. and Errol Flynn. Free maps at Visitor Information.

Forest Lawn is, before being a cemetery, a 121-hectare park-museum of classical sculpture, stained glass and architecture inspired by European cathedrals. The main entrance is at 1712 S Glendale Avenue, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, no ticket required.

On arrival, pick up the free map at Visitor Information (to the right of the gate). The map does not mark MJ's grave — don't bother asking, staff are instructed not to confirm. It does mark the facade of the Great Mausoleum (where you can come within about 50 meters), the Court of Freedom (with the marble statue of George Washington) and the Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection.

The latter is the only interior space open to the public: it houses "The Crucifixion" by Jan Styka (1894), a 60-meter-long painting, one of the largest religious canvases in the world. Narrated sessions at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., free.

| Location | Access | Cost | Visit time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Mausoleum (interior + Holly Terrace) | CLOSED to public | — | Not accessible |
| Great Mausoleum (exterior facade) | Free | USD 0 | 15 min |
| Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection | Free, narrated session | USD 0 | 30 min |
| Court of Freedom (Washington statue) | Free | USD 0 | 10 min |
| Walt Disney grave (Court of Freedom) | Free | USD 0 | 5 min |
| Sammy Davis Jr. grave (Garden of Honor) | Free | USD 0 | 5 min |
| Wee Kirk o' the Heather (Scottish chapel) | Free | USD 0 | 20 min |
| Park map | Visitor Information | USD 0 | — |

Allow 2-3 hours to cover the full outdoor loop. The park is large and has hills: bring water and comfortable shoes.

### Protocol of respect at Holly Terrace and surroundings

**TL;DR**: No photos of the Great Mausoleum facade, no noise, no large groups. Clothing covering shoulders and knees (mausoleum rule, even outside). Flowers for MJ go at the outer entrance of the Great Mausoleum — staff collect them periodically. No banners, no signs, no T-shirts with his face printed on them.

Forest Lawn is an active cemetery. Funerals take place daily. The euphoric-fan vibe that works at Graceland does not work here. In Memphis you visit a house-museum. In Glendale you visit a place where, at that very moment, someone may be burying their father.

Explicit Forest Lawn rules (enforced by guards who circulate discreetly):

1. **No photography** inside the Great Mausoleum or the Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection. Outside, personal photos are tolerated, but avoid photographing the mausoleum facade in tourist poses.
2. **No loud voices**, no music, no ringing phones.
3. **No flowers at Holly Terrace** because access is barred. Flowers should be left at the outer entrance of the Great Mausoleum, in a marked area.
4. **Dress**: shoulders covered, no short shorts, no sleeveless shirts. This rule is enforced even at the park entrance by guards.
5. **No groups larger than 6 people** without prior authorization. Fan groups on landmark dates (birthday, anniversary of death) are closely monitored.
6. **No lit candles**, no incense, no open flame. Fire risk in the park.

On June 25 (anniversary of death) and August 29 (MJ's birthday) the fan flow is high. In 2024 and 2025 Forest Lawn increased the security presence on these dates. If you go on these days, arrive early (by 9:30 a.m.) or accept that the facade area will be crowded.

### Other famous graves at Forest Lawn Glendale

**TL;DR**: Besides MJ, Forest Lawn Glendale holds Walt Disney (Court of Freedom, accessible), Elizabeth Taylor (Great Mausoleum Holly Terrace, inaccessible), Clark Gable (Great Mausoleum Sanctuary of Trust, inaccessible), Humphrey Bogart (Great Mausoleum Gardens of Memory, inaccessible), Jean Harlow (Great Mausoleum Sanctuary of Benediction, inaccessible), Sammy Davis Jr. (Garden of Honor, accessible) and Errol Flynn (Garden of Everlasting Peace, accessible).

A detail few fans know: Elizabeth Taylor, a close friend of MJ for decades, is interred in the same Holly Terrace, just a few meters from his crypt. She died in March 2011 and her family chose the spot precisely for the closeness to her friend. As Holly Terrace is closed, it is also off-limits to the public.

| Celebrity | Location | Accessible? |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Jackson (1958-2009) | Great Mausoleum, Holly Terrace | NO |
| Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011) | Great Mausoleum, Holly Terrace | NO |
| Walt Disney (1901-1966) | Court of Freedom | YES |
| Clark Gable (1901-1960) | Great Mausoleum, Sanctuary of Trust | NO |
| Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957) | Great Mausoleum, Gardens of Memory | NO |
| Jean Harlow (1911-1937) | Great Mausoleum, Sanctuary of Benediction | NO |
| Sammy Davis Jr. (1925-1990) | Garden of Honor | YES |
| Errol Flynn (1909-1959) | Garden of Everlasting Peace | YES |
| Carole Lombard (1908-1942) | Great Mausoleum, Sanctuary of Trust | NO |
| Spencer Tracy (1900-1967) | Garden of Everlasting Peace | YES |

The concentration of legendary classic-cinema figures in the Great Mausoleum is no coincidence: in the 1930s and 40s the major studios (MGM, Warner) had an informal arrangement with Forest Lawn. The park was seen as the American equivalent of the aristocratic European cemeteries.

Walt Disney rests in a private family garden, in the open air, to the left of the Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection. The plaque is discreet, with his name and those of his wife Lillian and daughter Sharon. Forget the urban legend that Disney was frozen: he was cremated and his ashes lie in this family niche, a fact confirmed by the Disney Family Trust.

### How to get there: LAX, Burbank and Hollywood

**TL;DR**: From LAX (the main airport), 38 km and 30-50 min by car outside rush hour. From Burbank Airport (BUR), 8 km and 12-15 min. Uber LAX → Forest Lawn costs USD 45-65, Burbank → USD 18-25. No direct subway: B Line (Red Line) reaches North Hollywood and from there it's 15 min by Uber to the park.

Forest Lawn Glendale sits in the valley, against the Griffith Park hills. The location favors those staying in Burbank, Glendale or Hollywood. Anyone in Santa Monica or Venice Beach will spend 1h-1h30 by car in rush hour.

| Origin | Distance | Time (no rush) | Time (rush) | Estimated Uber |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LAX | 38 km | 30 min | 50-70 min | USD 45-65 |
| Burbank Airport (BUR) | 8 km | 12 min | 15-20 min | USD 18-25 |
| Hollywood (Walk of Fame) | 14 km | 20 min | 35-45 min | USD 22-30 |
| Santa Monica | 32 km | 35 min | 75 min | USD 40-55 |
| Downtown LA | 16 km | 18 min | 35 min | USD 22-28 |
| Universal Studios | 7 km | 12 min | 18 min | USD 15-22 |

Renting a car pays off if you plan to combine other destinations (Griffith Observatory, Universal, Hollywood Sign). Economy daily rental in LA: USD 45-60 + USD 20-30 hotel parking. Forest Lawn's own parking is free, spacious and well signed.

For public transit only: take the B Line (Red Line) subway to North Hollywood station and from there Uber/Lyft 15 min to the park (USD 12-15). There is no direct bus.

### Combining with an MJ pilgrimage across Los Angeles

**TL;DR**: A good day pays off: Forest Lawn in the morning (9 a.m.-12 p.m.), lunch in Burbank or Hollywood, MJ's Walk of Fame star (6840 Hollywood Blvd) in the afternoon, TCL Chinese Theatre, Capitol Records Tower (1750 Vine St) where "Off The Wall" was mixed in 1979, and a wrap-up at Griffith Observatory for sunset. Total cost: USD 0 admission + USD 60-90 transport + meals.

There is an MJ circuit through LA that works well in a single day. Order matters: start at Forest Lawn early (the park opens at 8 a.m., ideal to arrive by 9 while it's empty), continue along Hollywood Boulevard in the afternoon when the Walk of Fame is busy, and finish at Griffith Observatory at golden hour with views of the Hollywood Sign.

**Morning (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) — Forest Lawn Glendale**
Arrival, map at Visitor Information, Great Mausoleum facade, Court of Freedom (Disney), Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection (10 a.m. or 12 p.m. session), outdoor graves of Sammy Davis Jr. and Errol Flynn.

**Lunch (12 p.m.-1:30 p.m.)**
In Burbank: Porto's Bakery (315 N Brand Blvd, Glendale, USD 8-12, legendary Cuban sandwiches). In Hollywood: Musso & Frank Grill (6667 Hollywood Blvd, USD 35-60, the oldest restaurant in Hollywood, open since 1919).

**Afternoon (2 p.m.-5 p.m.) — Hollywood**
Walk of Fame, MJ's star at **6840 Hollywood Blvd**, in front of TCL Chinese Theatre. The star is on the north side of the sidewalk. Photos allowed. Beware of confusion between Michael Jackson (the singer, star in front of Chinese Theatre) and Michael Jackson (a radio host, another star on Vine Street): many people photograph the wrong one.

Right next door, TCL Chinese Theatre (6925 Hollywood Blvd) with handprints in cement — MJ has no handprint here, but Elizabeth Taylor does.

**Late afternoon (5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.) — Capitol Records**
Capitol Records Tower at **1750 Vine St**, a 10-minute walk from the Walk of Fame. It was in studios A and B of this tower that parts of "Off The Wall" (1979) and "Thriller" (1982) were mixed with Quincy Jones. Facade accessible, interior closed to the public — it is an active studio. The shot of the tower from below is the classic.

**Sunset (6:30 p.m.-8 p.m.) — Griffith Observatory**
3 km from the Capitol. Views of the Hollywood Sign and of the valley where Forest Lawn sits — at night you can see the lights of Glendale in the distance. Closes the MJ circuit with the best panoramic view of LA. Free entry, parking USD 4-10.

### Other important MJ memorials around the world

**TL;DR**: Beyond Forest Lawn, three places function as significant MJ memorials: the Apollo Theater (253 W 125th St, Harlem NY) where the Jackson 5 won Amateur Night in 1967 and where a public memorial was held in 2009; Neverland Ranch (Los Olivos, CA, 200 km from LA, closed to the public since 2008); and the Hayvenhurst Estate in Encino (Jackson family, private). The Apollo is the only one accessible to tourists.

The **Apollo Theater** in Harlem held a public memorial on June 30, 2009, five days after MJ's death. More than 10,000 fans filled 125th Street. The theater still references the Jackson 5 in the tour narrative ("Apollo Theater Historical Tour", USD 25, 60 min, Tuesdays and Wednesdays). It was at Amateur Night on August 13, 1967, that the Jackson 5 earned their first major stage, with Michael at 9 years old.

**Neverland Ranch** in Los Olivos (200 km north of LA, in the Santa Ynez Valley) is today owned by billionaire Ron Burkle, who bought it in 2020 for USD 22 million. Closed to the public since 2008. The gate is visitable, but there is no signage and the neighborhood is hostile to fans. Not recommended as a destination.

**Hayvenhurst Estate** in Encino, the house where the Jackson family lived in the 80s and 90s, remains private family property. It sits at 4641 Hayvenhurst Avenue. You only see the gate from the street. Quiet, tolerant neighborhood, but nothing interactive.

**Gary, Indiana** — the house where MJ was born, at 2300 Jackson Street, still stands, today a memorial managed by the family. Opens sporadically on landmark dates. Cost: suggested donation USD 5-10.

Forest Lawn remains the most obvious pilgrimage point because it concentrates grave + easy access (LA is a global hub) + other tributes to celebrities interred in the same park.
