Cherry blossom season is gorgeous and expensive. Autumn is underrated and probably the smarter call. When to go to Japan in 2026, minus the clichés — by interest, by region, by budget.

Sakura 2026: Tokyo opens around Mar 19 and peaks ~Mar 27; Kyoto opens ~Mar 23 and peaks ~Apr 1. Peak bloom lasts only 5–7 days — and the whole country knows it.
Autumn foliage (koyo) is the smart bet: Kyoto peaks between ~Nov 20 and ~Dec 5, with dry, stable weather and flights and hotels far cheaper than during sakura. Value wins.
AVOID Golden Week (Apr 29–May 6) and Obon (Aug 13–15): domestic airfares double, the shinkansen fills up, hotels vanish. It's when Japan itself is traveling.
Hokkaido runs on a different calendar: sakura only arrives in late April/early May (Sapporo ~Apr 30), and winter is a snow, ski, and Sapporo Snow Festival (February) destination.
June is tsuyu (the rainy season) on the main islands — cheap and empty, but wet; Hokkaido gets almost no rain and becomes a summer refuge.
