Prague is the only major Central European capital to reach the 21st century with its medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and art-nouveau urban fabric virtually intact. Neither the 16th-century Reformation, nor the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), nor either World War, nor 41 years of communism (1948-1989) could demolish what eight centuries built. Every corner unfolds an entire historical period: the Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock from 1410 still ticking, Prague Castle (the largest ancient castle in the world according to Guinness), St. Vitus Cathedral begun in 1344, the Old-New Synagogue from 1270 (Europe's oldest active synagogue).
But Prague isn't just preserved stone. It's one of Central Europe's most intellectually productive cities — Kafka was born and died here; Smetana and Dvořák composed here; Václav Havel wrote plays in pub basements before becoming president in 1989; Milan Kundera left here in exile; the Velvet Revolution changed the history of the Soviet bloc without firing a shot. The city of 1.3 million inhabitants moves at the rhythm of a smaller European capital, without the rush of Paris or Berlin, with beer at US$ 2 a mug, mid-range lodging at €120 a night, and a food scene that finally shed its little-cousin complex and reinvented itself in 2026 as one of the most interesting culinary landscapes east of Berlin.
