The standard 5-day Cusco and Machu Picchu itinerary for 2026 is Day 1 acclimatization in Cusco and Sacsayhuamán, Day 2 Sacred Valley with Pisac and Ollantaytambo, Day 3 PeruRail Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes, Day 4 Machu Picchu via Circuit 2, and Day 5 Rainbow Mountain or return via Lima. Couple cost excluding international flights: USD 1,400-2,200. JFK-CUZ flights via Lima or Mexico City run USD 950-1,450 round trip. Machu Picchu tickets are S/ 152-200 per circuit; the Vistadome train USD 75-130 per leg. Soroche at 3,399m is the real risk: coca tea, sorojchi pills, and 24-48h of mandatory rest on day one.
20 min read
Cusco at 3,399m was the Inca empire's capital and remains the only gateway to Machu Picchu. Americans land thinking they'll grab a shuttle from the airport to the citadel. They won't. You arrive at 3,399m, soroche hits within 6-10 hours, you sleep badly the first night, and you discover the train is mandatory because no road reaches Aguas Calientes.
Five days is the honest minimum. Four works if you skip the acclimatization buffer. Seven is the real comfort range — enough for Salkantay or Rainbow Mountain. This guide focuses on the 5-day standard: JFK-CUZ flights via Lima, San Blas lodging, PeruRail Vistadome, and Machu Picchu via Circuit 2 — the only circuit that still gets you the postcard shot.
The rule no one tells you: Machu Picchu's ticketing system changed in 2024 and now runs on fixed circuits with timed entry. Miss your slot, lose your ticket. Booking at tuboleto.cultura.pe (Peru's Ministry of Culture official site) 30 days out is the rule, not a suggestion.
Getting there: JFK-CUZ via Lima in 2026
TL;DRNo direct flight from the U.S. to Cusco. Standard route is JFK-LIM with LATAM, Delta, or American (8h), 3-4h layover in Lima, LIM-CUZ (1h20). Door to door: 14-18h. Typical 2026 fare: USD 950-1,450 round trip with 90 days lead.
LATAM sells JFK-LIM-CUZ as a single package with 23kg bags, guaranteed connection if the international leg delays. JetSmart and Sky Airline sell legs separately — cheaper, but if the international flight is late, you lose the domestic with no refund. Lowest fare window: book in January for May or September travel, avoiding the June-August peak.
Watch for flights arriving in Cusco after 1pm. The Alejandro Velasco Astete airport (CUZ) frequently closes due to afternoon winds (especially June-August). Book the arrival flight before 11am. Same rule for return. In case of cancellation, the only alternative is the Cruz del Sur overnight bus Cusco-Lima at S/ 150-250 in 21h.
Cusco airport is 10 min by taxi from the historic center. Official taxi from the exit ramp costs S/ 25-35. Uber works in Cusco at S/ 15-20. Don't take taxis from anyone soliciting in the terminal.
Soroche: the real risk at 3,399m
TL;DRSoroche (altitude sickness) hits 60% of tourists landing directly in Cusco. Symptoms: headache, nausea, insomnia, shortness of breath. Mandatory 24-48h acclimatization: rest, coca tea, sorojchi pills (S/ 30 at any pharmacy), hydration. Zero alcohol, zero physical exertion on Day 1.
The city sits higher than La Paz (3,640m) and Quito (2,850m). New Yorkers, Floridians, and Angelenos feel it more because they live at sea level. Denver and Salt Lake locals handle it better. Age, fitness, and sex don't predict much — soroche is a lottery.
Sorojchi pills (acetazolamide + caffeine) work preventively. One pill morning of arrival, one at night, for two days. Sold without prescription at any Cusco pharmacy for S/ 30-40 per pack. Coca tea is legal in Peru, helps mild symptoms, and most hotels serve it free at check-in. Don't bring coca leaves back to the U.S. — they're illegal under federal law.
Severe cases (persistent vomiting, mental confusion, shortness of breath at rest) require immediate descent. Private clinics in Cusco that serve tourists: Clínica Pardo (Av. de la Cultura) and Tourist Medical Assistance. Consultation with oxygen runs USD 80-150.
Acclimatization rule: Day 1 walk only in the historic center, sleep early. Day 2 you're cleared for the Sacred Valley, which sits lower (2,800m at Pisac, 2,792m at Ollantaytambo). That's why the itinerary runs in this order.
Day 1 and 2: Cusco, Sacsayhuamán, and Sacred Valley
TL;DRDay 1 stays in Cusco to acclimatize: easy walk around Plaza de Armas, San Blas, and the Cathedral. Sacsayhuamán in the afternoon if your body holds up. Day 2 is full Sacred Valley with Pisac (market and ruins) and Ollantaytambo, the mandatory train base for Aguas Calientes. Combined cost: USD 60-110 per person with transport and tickets.
Cusco walks well. Plaza de Armas with the Cathedral (S/ 40), Iglesia de la Compañía, and the Twelve-Angled Stone on Calle Hatun Rumiyoc are 10 min from each other. San Blas is the artisan district, with staircases, ateliers, and cafés. Lunch at Pacha Papa (Plaza San Blas) with cuy chactado runs S/ 70.
Sacsayhuamán is 15 min by taxi from the center (S/ 15 one way) and requires the full Cusco Tourist Ticket (S/ 130) or partial (S/ 70). The Inca fortress has 100-200-ton blocks fitted without mortar. Go late afternoon for the 5:30 PM sunset. Cold drops fast — bring a windbreaker.
Day 2 is Sacred Valley from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. Shared tour USD 35-50 with buffet lunch and tickets. Pisac has an artisan market (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday are best days) and terraced Inca ruins (S/ 70 with the partial ticket). Ollantaytambo is a living Inca town with houses still inhabited in their original structure. Sleeping there at Apu Lodge or Sol Ollantay (USD 60-100) saves the trip back to Cusco on Day 3.
Day 3: PeruRail Vistadome to Aguas Calientes
TL;DRThe train is the only way to reach Machu Picchu. PeruRail Vistadome Ollantaytambo-Aguas Calientes costs USD 75-130 per leg, with panoramic windows and 1h40min travel. Inca Rail is the alternative at USD 70-120. Departures start 5:20 AM; book 30 days out.
No road reaches Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). Access is by train (90% of tourists) or via the Inka/Salkantay trail (4-5 day hike). PeruRail and Inca Rail are the two operators. PeruRail tiers: Expedition (USD 65-100, basic), Vistadome (USD 75-130, panoramic windows, coffee and snack), and Hiram Bingham (USD 600+, Belmond luxury).
The train leaves from two stations: Ollantaytambo (most) or San Pedro de Cusco (more expensive and longer, 3h30). Always pick Ollantaytambo. The station is a 5-min walk from the town center. Luggage capped at 5 kg per passenger — store the big bag at your Cusco or Ollantaytambo hotel.
| Operator | Tier | Price (USD) | Duration | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PeruRail | Expedition | 65-100 | 1h40min | Standard seat |
| PeruRail | Vistadome | 75-130 | 1h40min | Panoramic windows, breakfast |
| PeruRail | Hiram Bingham | 600+ | 3h30min | Belmond luxury, dinner, open bar |
| Inca Rail | The Voyager | 70-110 | 1h40min | Basic |
| Inca Rail | 360 Machu Picchu | 95-140 | 1h40min | Panoramic ceiling |
Arriving in Aguas Calientes, a 3-star like El MaPi by Inkaterra costs USD 120-180. Good hostel (Supertramp) USD 25-40. Dinner at El Indio Feliz (French with Andean touches) S/ 80-120. The whole town runs on tourism — inflated prices, average quality.

Day 4: Machu Picchu via Circuit 2 and the Consettur bus
TL;DRIn 2024 Peru's Ministry of Culture restructured Machu Picchu into 5 timed circuits. Circuit 2 (USD 41-54) is the only one with the classic citadel postcard view. Consettur bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance: USD 24 round trip, 25 min. Wake up at 4:40 AM to catch the first 6 AM slot.
The visit system has changed. No more free roaming. The 5 circuits: Circuit 1 (high, panoramic, no guardhouse), Circuit 2 (classic with the postcard shot, recommended for first-timers), Circuit 3 (lower, agricultural terraces), Circuit 4 (Sun Temple and residential), and Circuits 1+Huayna Picchu / 1+Montaña Machu Picchu (with extra climb, separate booking 4 months out).
For 95% of first-time U.S. visitors, Circuit 2 is the call. S/ 152 for foreign adults in 2026. Buy at tuboleto.cultura.pe — only foreign Visa/Mastercard. Timed entry: 6 AM-2 PM slots. Recommendation: 7 or 8 AM, after sunrise but before the morning mist clears.
The Consettur bus leaves from Hermanos Ayar street in Aguas Calientes, runs 5:30 AM-3:30 PM, departs every 10 min. Buy the ticket at the booth across the street (USD 12 one way, USD 24 round trip). Line starts at 4:30 AM in high season. Alternative: hike up (the short Inca trail), 1h30 of steep climbing — save USD 24 and catch sunrise on the steps.
An official guide is mandatory inside the citadel. Hire at the entrance (USD 25-40 for a group of 4-8) or via your Aguas Calientes hotel. Without a guide, the ranger may turn you back. Max stay inside: 4 hours. No food, no metal-tipped poles, no drones.
Day 5: Rainbow Mountain or return via Lima
TL;DRRainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) sits at 5,200m and requires 3+ days of Cusco acclimatization. Day trip USD 35-60, leaves at 4 AM, returns 5 PM. Easier alternative: Maras-Moray in the Sacred Valley (3,500m) for USD 30-50. Travelers who prefer rest can use Day 5 to return to Lima and overnight in Miraflores before the international flight.
Rainbow Mountain became Peru's second postcard after Machu Picchu. The hike is 4-5 km from the parking lot to the viewpoint, with short climbs that feel easy at sea level but turn brutal at 5,200m. Travelers who didn't acclimatize properly in Cusco genuinely suffer. Horse to near the summit: S/ 80-120 round trip.
Tour leaves Cusco 4 AM, breakfast at 6 AM in Cusipata, trekking 8:30 AM-noon, lunch, back in Cusco by 5 PM. Reliable operators: Flashpacker Connect, Cusco Local Adventures, Alpaca Expeditions. Typical package USD 35-60 with transfer, lunch, and community fee (S/ 30 entrance).
Easier alternative — Maras-Moray and Salineras: half-day or full-day Sacred Valley tour at USD 30-50. Moray is the circular Inca terraces forming an amphitheater, an agricultural lab for microclimate testing. Salineras de Maras has 4,500 salt evaporation pools running since pre-Inca times. Spectacular photos, minimal exertion.
Travelers using Day 5 for rest and return: Cusco-Lima flight at 11 AM, lunch in Miraflores at La Mar (Acurio's ceviche restaurant, S/ 80-150 per plate), free afternoon, Lima-JFK overnight. Works if the trip has been heavy.
Where to stay in Cusco and Aguas Calientes
TL;DRIn Cusco, San Blas is the recommended neighborhood: charming, near the center, no traffic. A 4-star like Antigua Casona San Blas costs USD 80-150 per night in 2026. In Aguas Calientes, El MaPi by Inkaterra (USD 120-180) or Tierra Viva Machu Picchu (USD 90-140) are 5 min from the station. Avoid lodging near Cusco's central market.
San Blas is Cusco's artisan neighborhood: colonial houses, ateliers, cafés. Antigua Casona San Blas (USD 100-150), Casa San Blas Boutique (USD 90-130), and Hotel Rumi Punku (USD 80-110) are safe picks. Real luxury: Belmond Palacio Nazarenas (USD 600+) and JW Marriott El Convento (USD 450+).
Good hostels: Pariwana Hostel Cusco (USD 18-30 dorm, USD 60-80 private), Wild Rover Cusco (USD 15-25, noisy pub vibe), and Selina Cusco (USD 25-40, coworking included). Airbnb in San Blas with private kitchen: USD 50-90 per night for a couple.
Neighborhoods to avoid: around the San Pedro Central Market (nighttime safety issues) and Av. de la Cultura (far from the historic center, no charm). Cuesta Santa Ana is a good cheaper alternative to San Blas with city views.
In Aguas Calientes the entire village is tourist lodging. El MaPi by Inkaterra is 3 min from the PeruRail station, with breakfast at 4:30 AM for first-bus catchers. Tierra Viva is a solid cheaper alternative. Avoid the cheapest hostels (USD 10-15) — heavy humidity and train noise.
Total couple cost, 5 days in 2026
TL;DRStandard couple cost for 5 days in Cusco and Machu Picchu in 2026, excluding international flights: USD 1,400-2,200. Backpacker tight budget: USD 800-1,100. JFK-CUZ via Lima for a couple: USD 1,900-2,900. Grand total for 5 full days: USD 3,300-5,100 per couple.
| Item | Backpacker (USD) | Standard (USD) | Comfort (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-night lodging | 100-160 | 400-600 | 800-1,500 |
| Ollantaytambo-AC train round trip (2 pax) | 260-400 | 350-500 | 500-1,200 |
| Machu Picchu Circuit 2 ticket (2 pax) | 82-108 | 82-108 | 82-108 |
| Consettur bus (2 pax) | 48 | 48 | 48 |
| Machu Picchu guide | 25-40 | 30-50 | 50-80 |
| Cusco Tourist Ticket (2 pax) | 140-260 | 260 | 260 |
| Lima-Cusco-Lima flights (2 pax) | 240-400 | 280-450 | 350-600 |
| Tours (Sacred Valley + Rainbow) | 70-120 | 130-200 | 200-300 |
| 5-day meals (2 pax) | 150-250 | 300-500 | 600-1,000 |
| Transfers and taxi | 30-50 | 50-80 | 80-150 |
| Couple total | 1,145-1,836 | 1,930-2,796 | 2,970-5,246 |
Where to spend, where to cut: it's worth paying for Vistadome on the train (real scenery), Circuit 2 at Machu Picchu (only postcard angle), and a San Blas hotel (safety and charm). Skip: full Cusco Tourist Ticket if you're only doing Sacsayhuamán and Pisac (use the partial), Hiram Bingham (pure overpriced), and the inflated Rainbow Mountain tour (local operators are interchangeable).

Frequently asked questions
Five days is the honest minimum to include acclimatization, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and one extra day trip. Four works but cuts your soroche margin. Seven is real comfort, with Salkantay or Rainbow Mountain included. Three only gets you Machu Picchu without the Sacred Valley and without proper acclimatization — high risk.
