Istanbul in 5 days: the only city in the world straddling two continents, without falling into tourist traps

Sultanahmet in the morning, the Bosphorus by afternoon, Kadıköy for dinner — and none of the three is the same city. This is the real itinerary, with 2026 prices, a hamam worth the money, and Grand Bazaar haggling done right.

Istanbul is not "the door to Asia" — it is both sides at once, and travelers who treat it as a European destination miss half the trip. In 5 days you can cover the historic side, the bohemian side, the Asian local side, and a traditional hamam without falling into tourist traps. This guide is written for someone arriving at IST having never seen the city, with a fluctuating currency and the goal of leaving saying they understood it — not just "passed through."

Istanbul is the only city in the world built on two continents. This sounds like agency marketing, but it's literal: you have breakfast in Europe, catch a 20-minute ferry, and have dinner in Asia. No other destination on the planet delivers this. And this simple fact defines the entire trip — travelers who treat Istanbul as "Eastern Europe" miss the Asian half, where actual Istanbulites live. Those who treat it as "exotic Asia" are surprised by Beyoğlu's European sophistication. The secret is understanding they are overlapping cities.

This guide assumes a first visit, couple or solo, 5 full days in the city (excluding flights), mid-to-high budget (US$ 1,500-2,500 per person on the ground, excluding airfare). All updated for early 2026 prices.

Before boarding — documents, currency, flights, airport

TL;DRVisa: US, UK, EU citizens don't need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Brazilians and some other nationalities get an e-visa at evisa.gov.tr (US$ 50, 10 minutes). Passport with 6 months minimum validity. Currency: Turkish lira (TRY). In 2026 trading around 38 TRY per dollar, high volatility.

Currency: Turkish lira (TRY). In 2026 trading around 38 TRY per dollar, high volatility. Use Wise, Revolut, or Charles Schwab for ATM withdrawals at Garanti, Akbank, or Yapı Kredi. Avoid yellow Euronet ATMs. Never exchange money at the airport.

Flights: Turkish Airlines hub in IST. Round-trip prices vary widely. September-October and April-May offer the best balance of price and weather. Avoid July-August (38°C, peak crowds).

Airport: Istanbul New Airport (IST), opened 2018, sits 50 km from downtown. The old Atatürk is closed to commercial flights. From IST to center: HVIST bus IST-19 or IST-1 (€5-7, 60-90 min), official yellow taxi (~€40-55), or prepaid private transfer (€30-45 via GetTransfer or Welcome Pickups). Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is the second airport on the Asian side — low-cost flights (Pegasus).

Where to stay — the neighborhood defines the trip

Best time to visit the USA: a month-by-month guide for 2026

The best time to visit the United States in 2026 is fall (September to November): mild weather, red leaves across New England, hotels running 30-40% cheaper than summer, and American kids back in school. Skip June through August (U.S. summer break, heat, and peak pricing) and steer clear of Atlantic and Florida hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. This guide breaks it down month by month, region by region, with the actual 2026 holiday dates and the warning no travel agency gives you.

Best time to visit Japan in 2026: the honest guide by season and region

The best time to visit Japan in 2026 depends on what you want. Cherry blossoms (sakura) peak from late March to early April in Tokyo and Kyoto — stunning, but pricey and packed. Autumn foliage (koyo), from mid- to late November, delivers red maple leaves with half the crowds and far more civil prices, and it's the best value of the year. Whatever you choose, steer clear of Golden Week (Apr 29–May 6) and Obon (Aug 13–15): they're the two most expensive, most crowded stretches on the Japanese calendar.

Best time to visit Europe: a month-by-month guide (2026)

The best time to visit Europe is spring (April and May) and early autumn (September): mild weather, thinner crowds, and prices running 20% to 40% below the summer peak. July and August are the high season — the most expensive, hottest, and most crowded stretch on the whole continent. If price is the only thing that matters, winter (January–February, outside the holidays) is the cheapest time of year, with the caveat of cold and short days.
