World Nomads charges USD 4-12 per day and covers climbing. SafetyWing renews monthly at USD 45 and ignores your country of origin. Allianz hits USD 1 million in medical coverage but demands USD 400 per trip. AXA is the Schengen visa default. Heymondo offers family discounts. IMG Patriot is the best policy for entering the United States.

Travel insurance is the most-sold product by online travel agencies and the least-read by travelers. Twenty-three percent of policies activated in 2025 had refunds partially or totally denied, according to aggregated data from InsureMyTrip and Squaremouth. Not because the insurer cheated, but because the traveler bought blind at checkout without reading the exclusions.

The industry knows this and designs cheap policies with generous fine print. Anyone who flew once, bought the USD 12 plan from the airline website, slipped in Bangkok, and discovered that slipping on a wet hotel floor is excluded knows the size of the trap. Anyone who flies fifteen times a year without any insurance also learns, sooner or later, that medical helicopter evacuation from Bali runs USD 80,000.

This comparison covers the eight insurers dominating the global market in 2026, with raw coverage numbers, the hidden clauses most activated in real claims, and the simple formula for who wins in each travel profile.

The eight policies that matter in 2026

The industry splits into four functional categories. Traditional per-trip insurers (Allianz, AIG TravelGuard, IMG Patriot) charge a lot for a specific trip and offer robust cancellation coverage. Nomad-friendly monthly subscription insurers (SafetyWing, World Nomads in extended mode) serve those who live on the road. European-regulated insurers (AXA Schengen, AXA Global, Heymondo, True Traveller) operate under EU rules. And airline/credit-card embedded insurers that almost never cover what you actually need.

World Nomads — the adventure standard

World Nomads has operated since 1999 and built its reputation with backpackers practicing activities other policies exclude. Today it's a subsidiary of Australia's nib group, with underwriting by Nationwide in the U.S. and Generali in other markets.

2026 base price: USD 4-12 per day depending on age, destination, and tier. Two tiers: Standard and Explorer. Explorer covers 200+ activities including trekking above 6,000m, scuba diving to 50m, surfing, rock climbing with rope, paragliding, motocross.

Standard medical coverage: USD 100,000 on Explorer, USD 100,000 on Standard with additional exclusions. Medical evacuation: USD 500,000. Trip cancellation: USD 10,000. Baggage: USD 3,000 with USD 500 per-item cap.

Where it wins: the only mainstream policy that covers climbing above 4,500m without expensive upgrades, full recreational diving, and activities other insurers exclude by default. Accepts purchase after you've already left the country, unlike nearly all competitors.

Where it breaks: the USD 100,000 medical cap is low for the United States. One night in an American ICU runs USD 15,000-25,000. A serious accident burns through the entire coverage in three days.

SafetyWing — monthly subscription for digital nomads

SafetyWing launched in 2018 with a renewable monthly subscription model designed for those on the move. Today it covers about 175,000 active members, mostly digital nomads, freelancers, and expats.

2026 price: USD 45.08 per four weeks for ages 18-39, USD 73 for 40-49, USD 138 for 50-59. Covers stays outside your country of residence for up to 364 days. U.S. coverage optional at USD 90/month extra.

Medical coverage: USD 250,000 per incident, USD 1,000 deductible. Evacuation: USD 100,000. Cancellation: zero — this is not a cancellation policy, it's portable nomad health insurance. Baggage: USD 3,000 optional add-on.

Where it wins: the subscription auto-renews while you're abroad. No need to pick dates, estimate trip duration, cancel and rebuy. Accepts any country of origin, any destination except sanctioned ones. Includes 24/7 telemedicine. Covers COVID like any other illness.

Where it breaks: doesn't cover flight cancellation, delay, missed connection, or trip reimbursement. It's purely a portable health plan. Extreme sports excluded — climbing, deep diving, skydiving, motorcycling are automatic exclusions. Pre-existing conditions not covered for the first 365 continuous days of coverage.

Allianz Global Assistance — the traditional premium

Allianz is the largest travel insurer worldwide by volume, present in 70+ countries. In the U.S. market it operates via Allianz Global Assistance USA. The same brand operates across the EU and Asia.

2026 per-trip price: USD 150-400 depending on age, duration, trip value, and tier. Four main U.S. tiers: Basic (USD 150), Classic (USD 220), Classic Plus (USD 280), Premier (USD 400).

Premier 2026 coverage: USD 1 million medical expense, USD 1 million medical evacuation, USD 100,000 cancellation, USD 2,000 baggage, USD 2,000 flight delay, 24/7 concierge. Covers pre-existing conditions if the policy is purchased within 14 days of the first trip booking (the "look-back period" clause).

Where it wins: USD 1 million medical coverage is the highest on the market for under USD 500. Trip cancellation with "cancel for any reason" available as add-on (75% refund for any reason, including "changed my mind"). Field assistance network in every relevant tourist hub.

Where it breaks: the Basic tier (USD 150) only provides USD 50,000 medical. Insufficient for U.S. travel. Standard cancellation requires closed-list justification (illness, family death, natural disaster) and won't cover "decided not to go." Adventure limited — climbing above 4,500m, diving below 30m, paragliding excluded without the Adventure Pack upgrade (USD 50 extra).

AXA Schengen — the European requirement

AXA Schengen Visa Insurance is the most-purchased policy by travelers needing a Schengen visa. EU regulation requires minimum medical coverage of EUR 30,000 for visa issuance, and AXA became the de facto standard because it issues a certificate accepted by every EU consulate.

2026 price: USD 1.06 per day (Low Cost tier, EUR 30,000 coverage), USD 1.75 per day (Europe Travel, EUR 100,000), USD 2.82 per day (Multi Trip annual). For a 14-day European trip, USD 15-40 total.

Where it wins: meets consular requirements at minimum price. Certificate issuance is instant online, accepted by every Schengen consulate. Covers all 26 Schengen countries plus the UK, Ireland, and Croatia.

Where it breaks: it's a legal minimum policy, not real protection. EUR 30,000 covers a stomach bug, not a serious fracture requiring surgery. Cancellation and baggage are almost symbolic.

AXA Global Travel — the serious sibling of Schengen

AXA also operates AXA Assistance USA and AXA Global Travel Insurance with real premium coverage, unrelated to the Schengen version. 2026 price: USD 50-200 per trip depending on duration and destination.

Platinum 2026 coverage: USD 250,000 medical, USD 1 million evacuation, USD 100,000 cancellation, USD 3,000 baggage, USD 1,500 delay, global concierge. Includes pre-existing if policy purchased within 30 days of first payment.

Where it wins: strong coverage in Asian destinations where Allianz has a weaker network. Real multilingual support (not chatbot). Accepts last-minute purchase up to 24h before departure.

Where it breaks: smaller U.S. network than Allianz. Cancellation for discretionary reasons requires the expensive CFAR upgrade (+USD 80 per trip). Adventure activities limited to "passive recreation" without add-on.

Heymondo — the Spanish challenger

Heymondo is a Spanish startup founded in 2017, now one of Europe's fastest-growing travel insurtechs. Operates 100% digital, native app, paperless.

2026 price: USD 6-15 per day. Three tiers: Top (USD 6/day, USD 250,000 medical), Premium (USD 10/day, USD 500,000), Long Stay (USD 15/day, annual). 10% family discount for 2 adults + 1 child, 15% for families of 4+.

Where it wins: best value for families — the 15% discount makes a 4-person policy cheaper than buying individually with Allianz or AXA. App has a "need a doctor now" button that connects to local hospitals in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Where it breaks: COVID coverage tied to documented full vaccination. Adventure activities excluded in the Top tier, require Sport upgrade (+USD 3/day) on Premium.

IMG Patriot Travel — the best for entering the U.S.

International Medical Group has operated the Patriot Travel program since 1990, focused on travelers heading to the United States. Underwriting by Sirius International.

2026 price: USD 30-150 per trip. Four plans: Patriot Lite (USD 30, USD 50,000), Patriot Travel (USD 60, USD 250,000), Patriot Platinum Travel (USD 100, USD 1 million), Patriot America Plus (USD 150, USD 1 million + pre-existing).

Where it wins: policy engineered for the American hospital system. Has direct billing with hospitals — the patient doesn't pay upfront and wait for reimbursement, the hospital bills the insurer directly. Accepts stable pre-existing conditions (12 months unchanged medication) in the America Plus tier.

Where it breaks: weaker coverage outside the U.S. Zero trip cancellation — it's a health policy, not a cancellation policy. Baggage not covered.

TravelGuard AIG — the American Express partner

TravelGuard is the AIG travel division, and the official American Express partner for the insurance benefit embedded in Amex Platinum, Gold, and Centurion. Also sells standalone retail policies. Chase Sapphire Reserve embeds equivalent coverage via separate underwriting.

2026 retail price: USD 60-300 per trip. Four tiers: Essential (USD 60), Preferred (USD 130), Deluxe (USD 230), Annual (USD 300/year multi-trip coverage).

Where it wins: Amex Platinum cardholders receive premium TravelGuard included at no extra cost in the annual fee. Trip inconvenience coverage (trip delay, missed connection) is the best on the market — automatic payment if delay exceeds 6h, no claim filing required.

Where it breaks: standard medical coverage of USD 100,000 is weak. For non-Amex Platinum cardholders, better options exist at the same price.

True Traveller — the British budget option

True Traveller is a UK insurer founded in 2011 with a budget-adventure model. Mainly serves UK, Ireland, and EU residents, with some policies open to other markets.

2026 price: USD 4-9 per day. Three tiers: Value (USD 4/day, GBP 5 million medical), Traveller (USD 6/day, GBP 7.5 million), Traveller Plus (USD 9/day, GBP 10 million).

Where it wins: the highest medical coverage on the market in absolute value (GBP 10 million ≈ USD 12.5 million) at the lowest price in the adventure category. Includes long-stay backpacking up to 18 continuous months.

Where it breaks: mainly designed for UK/EU residents — some claims outside those markets are harder to process. Trip cancellation only covered for closed-list reasons.

Who wins in each profile

Digital nomad, 6-12 months abroad

SafetyWing. The renewable monthly subscription is the only model that makes sense if you don't have a return date. USD 45 every 4 weeks, no need to predict total duration. Covers 175 countries. Limitation: doesn't cover flight cancellation, so anyone booking far in advance needs to combine with a credit card that does.

Family of 2+2 on a 10-14 day vacation

Heymondo Premium with family discount. The 15% discount makes a 4-person policy cheaper than individual Allianz or AXA policies. USD 500,000 medical coverage each is sufficient for any destination except the U.S. For U.S. travel, switch to Allianz Premier.

Senior 60+ international trip

Allianz Premier or IMG Patriot America Plus. Both accept ages up to 80-99 and cover stable pre-existing conditions. Allianz has a stronger global network for Europe and Asia. IMG Patriot is U.S.-specific with hospital direct billing. For cruises, Allianz is the standard since most cruise lines list Allianz as recommended insurance.

Adventure, climbing, diving, motorcycling

World Nomads Explorer or True Traveller Plus. The only two mainstream policies covering 150-200+ adventure activities without expensive upgrades. World Nomads wins for climbing above 4,500m and mountain expeditions. True Traveller wins for long-stay backpacking with constant adventure.

Travel to the U.S., any profile

IMG Patriot Platinum or Allianz Premier. The American hospital system is so expensive that coverage below USD 500,000 is financial Russian roulette. IMG Patriot has direct billing in the UnitedHealthcare network — no out-of-pocket payment. Allianz has broader coverage but reimburses after payment. For exchange students in the U.S., IMG Patriot America is the standard required by many universities.

Schengen visa, short European trip

AXA Schengen Europe Travel. Meets consular requirement (EUR 30,000 minimum) at a better tier (EUR 100,000), USD 1.75/day. For more serious trips, complement with a premium credit card carrying embedded insurance, or switch to Heymondo Premium for real higher coverage.

Amex Platinum holder, frequent traveler

TravelGuard via Amex. Already included in the annual fee. Excellent coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost baggage. For strong medical coverage, supplement with a standalone policy when the destination demands it (U.S., expedition, etc.).

The hidden clauses that cancel refunds

Every policy has a section called "general exclusions" no one reads. Four categories account for 78% of denied claims in 2025 per InsureMyTrip data.

Undeclared pre-existing medical conditions

The single biggest source of denial. If the local hospital doctor finds out you had a cardiac event in 2024 and didn't declare it at purchase, the claim is denied in full. The "look-back period" clause varies: Allianz looks back 60-180 days before purchase, AXA looks back 90 days, World Nomads looks back 90 days. To avoid: declare everything, buy the policy within 14-30 days of the first trip booking.

Alcohol/drugs clause

Nearly all policies exclude any claim where the insured was under the influence of alcohol above the local legal limit or illegal substances. Slipping on bar stairs in Bangkok with 0.8 g/L blood alcohol: claim denied. Motorcycle accident in Bali without a valid international license and beer in your bloodstream: claim denied and rental moto loss not refunded.

Per-item baggage caps

Total baggage coverage looks generous (USD 2,000-3,000), but the per-item cap is tight (USD 300-500). Stolen USD 2,500 laptop: USD 500 refund. Professional USD 4,000 camera: USD 500 refund. For expensive electronics, take the "high value items" add-on (+USD 30-80) or use a premium credit card with higher electronics coverage.

Undeclared adventure activity

The Standard plan covers "passive recreational sports." Theme park zipline: covered. Amazon canopy zipline: gray area, depends on insurer. Intro diving without certification: excluded almost everywhere. Quad bike on dunes: excluded on Allianz Basic, covered on World Nomads Explorer.

COVID coverage conditioned

Post-pandemic, several insurers kept restrictive clauses. Heymondo requires documented full vaccination. AXA Schengen Low Cost excludes COVID. TravelGuard Essential excludes COVID. Mandatory quarantine ordered by local health authority rarely covered (only on Allianz Premier and World Nomads).

How to book: direct sites vs. comparators

Directly on the insurer's site

Cheaper on average (no intermediary commission). Identical coverage. Recommended for: SafetyWing (safetywing.com), World Nomads (worldnomads.com), Heymondo (heymondo.com), Allianz (allianztravelinsurance.com).

InsureMyTrip — the American comparator

InsureMyTrip.com compares 23 insurers including Allianz, AIG TravelGuard, IMG, Travelex, Generali, Seven Corners. Shows price, coverage, customer rating side by side. Filter by age, destination, activity, trip value. Final price identical to the insurer's direct site (no markup).

Squaremouth — the honest comparator

Squaremouth.com focuses on fine-print transparency. Explicitly shows what each policy excludes via a "compare exclusions" side-by-side panel. Lists pre-existing, alcohol, activity, COVID, extreme sports.

Credit card embedded coverage

Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum, and high-tier Visa Infinite cards bring travel insurance embedded when the trip is paid with the card. Typical coverage: USD 50-250K medical, USD 1M evacuation, USD 2-10K cancellation. Rarely sufficient alone but a good complementary layer to a dedicated policy.

The math of when to buy

Average premium policy cost for a 10-day international trip: USD 50-150. Average uncovered medical event cost in a developed country: USD 5,000 to USD 80,000. International medical evacuation cost without coverage: USD 30,000 to USD 250,000 (helicopter + medical flight + airborne ICU).

The cost-benefit ratio makes travel insurance the most obvious financial product in the travel market. Even travelers who consider insurance "a waste" would change their mind seeing the first U.S. hospital bill after an uncomplicated appendicitis. The question isn't whether it's worth it. It's which one to pick. The wrong choice costs little in premium and a lot in denied claims. Frequent travelers understand that annual multi-trip policies (Allianz Annual, TravelGuard Annual, AXA Multi Trip) cost half what buying per-trip does.

Liked it? Save or share.

Key points

World Nomads and True Traveller cover the widest range of adventure sports without expensive upgrades.

SafetyWing leads for digital nomads with unlimited monthly renewal at USD 45.

Allianz Premier and IMG Patriot Platinum are the only two policies safe for U.S. hospital costs.

UK ETA 2026: What It Is, Who Needs It, and How to Apply (A Guide for U.S. Travelers)

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a mandatory electronic travel authorization for Americans and 80-plus other visa-exempt nationalities, fully enforced at boarding since February 25, 2026. It costs £20 per person (up from £16 on April 8, 2026), is valid for two years or until your passport expires, allows multiple entries, and permits stays of up to six months per visit. It is not a visa: it is an online pre-screening done through the official UK ETA app or at gov.uk/eta, approved within minutes in most cases. Every traveler needs their own ETA, including infants. Airside connections at Heathrow and Manchester are still exempt, but that rule is temporary.

Henley Passport Index 2026 — the world's strongest passports (and where the US really stands)

The Henley Passport Index measures how many destinations a passport reaches without arranging a visa first. In 2026, Singapore leads with roughly 195 destinations, Japan sits just behind, and the United States has dropped out of the top tier it dominated a decade ago, now hovering near eighth. This guide explains how the index is calculated, the top 10, where the US fits today, and how to earn a genuinely stronger passport.
