Passport stolen abroad: the step-by-step that gets you back to Brazil

The Authorization for Return to Brazil, the ARB issued by the country's consulates and embassies, is the document that gets travelers with a stolen or lost passport back on a plane outside Brazil, but it only covers one route: a direct flight, or one with a technical stopover, to Brazilian territory, never entry into a country that requires a visa. The first step is always a police report with the local authorities, which backs the request at the consulate. At most posts the ARB is issued free of charge within 24 to 72 hours; without a copy of the old passport, the same process can take twice as long.
