Child traveling alone: travel authorization and the unaccompanied minor service, no surprises at check-in

The travel authorization required under Brazil's Statute of the Child and Adolescent (Law 8.069/1990) and the unaccompanied minor service sold by airlines like LATAM, GOL, and Azul solve different problems and come with different price tags: the first is free, obtained at a notary office or the Federal Police, and clears the child to cross the border without her parents; the second is a separate paid service, between R$300 and R$900 per segment, and guarantees that someone from the airline accompanies the minor inside the airport. Confusing the two stalls families at check-in even when every court document is in order.
