Controlled medication abroad: what Japan, the UAE, and South Korea confiscate from your suitcase

Japan bans pseudoephedrine, found in cold medicines like Actifed and Vicks inhaler, and treats amphetamines such as Venvanse and, in certain cases, Ritalin as banned substances in checked baggage. The United Arab Emirates bars codeine and any product containing cannabidiol, even with a valid medical prescription. South Korea requires prior authorization through the Narcotics Information Portal for controlled medication covering more than thirty days of treatment. In all three cases, the problem is rarely the medication itself: it's the absence of a Japanese Yakkan Shoumei, an English-language prescription, or the correct form. Checking the bottle in the large suitcase, undeclared, is the costliest mistake at the border.
