In 2026, Patagonia has 3 hubs that became mandatory stops: El Calafate (gateway to Perito Moreno), El Chaltén (Argentine trekking capital) and Torres del Paine in Chile (5-day W trek or 8-day O Circuit). Flight JFK-EZE-FTE runs USD 1,400. Torres del Paine 2026 entry: CLP 48,500 (USD 49). The 14-day itinerary respects bus times, Cerro Castillo border lines, and the 100 km/h wind at Glaciar Grey.

Patagonia isn't a place — it's three regions glued together that feel like three different planets. El Calafate is mass Argentine tourism with Perito Moreno reachable by bus. El Chaltén is pure trekking, a 2,500-person village pinned against Fitz Roy. Torres del Paine in Chile is the postcard park with the most famous W trek in South America.
Most American travelers arrive thinking it's just colder Yellowstone. It isn't. Deep Patagonia is wind, ice, cold even in January, and complicated logistics crossing the Argentina-Chile border. This article's itinerary prioritizes realism: time lost on buses, queues at Paso Cerro Castillo, and the truth about the 4-day minimum in Torres del Paine.
Don't go in June. Don't go in July. Go between November and March — outside that window half the refugios close and the wind tops 100 km/h. This article assumes an October/26 or January/26 window.
How to get there: US-Patagonia flight in 2026
TL;DRThere's no direct flight. Fastest path: JFK → EZE (Buenos Aires) on American or Aerolíneas Argentinas, 4-8h layover, EZE → FTE (El Calafate) on Aerolíneas Argentinas. Total 22-26h door-to-door. Typical fare: USD 1,400-1,900 round trip. Buying 90 days out hits USD 1,150.
There's no direct flight US-Patagonia. Three real routes in 2026:
1. Via Buenos Aires (EZE) to El Calafate (FTE): JFK → EZE on American, Delta or Aerolíneas (10h), 4-8h layover in EZE (you switch to Aeroparque Jorge Newbery for domestic flights — taxi USD 15 between airports), EZE → FTE on Aerolíneas Argentinas (3h20). Total 22-26h. Typical fare: USD 1,400-1,900 round trip. Buying 90-120 days out hits USD 1,150.
2. Via Santiago (SCL) to Punta Arenas (PUQ): JFK or LAX → SCL on LATAM or American (10h from JFK, 12h from LAX), 3-5h layover, SCL → PUQ on LATAM Chile (3h30). Total 24-30h. Fare USD 1,600-2,200. Worth it if you start with Chile (Torres del Paine first).
3. Via Lima or Bogotá: alternative oneworld (LATAM via LIM) or SkyTeam (Avianca via BOG) routings, useful for AAdvantage or LifeMiles redemptions.
FTE airport is 23km from El Calafate. Taxi: AR$ 18,000 (USD 15). Shared van (Caltur, Patagonia Bus): AR$ 8,000 (USD 7). PUQ airport is 20km from Punta Arenas. Buses Fernández to Puerto Natales: CLP 12,000 (USD 12), 3h.
El Calafate and Perito Moreno: accessible ice
TL;DREl Calafate has 28,000 residents and exists only because of Perito Moreno tourism. Los Glaciares National Park 2026 entry: AR$ 45,000 (USD 38). 4km of boardwalks with views of the 70m-tall glacier. Mini-Trek on the ice USD 165, Big Ice (4h) USD 270 via Hielo y Aventura. Decent hotel USD 70/night, hostel USD 18.
El Calafate is an 8-block shopping town with restaurants, tour agencies and souvenir shops. It exists for Perito Moreno, period. Don't try to spend more than 3 days here.
Perito Moreno: a 30km-long glacier 70m above the water. The only one in the world still advancing (not retreating like the others). State boardwalks of 4km with 5 viewpoints — free after paying the park entry (AR$ 45,000/USD 38). Round trip on the regular bus AR$ 28,000 (USD 24), departs 7am and 8am from the terminal, returns at 4pm. Tour bus with lunch included (Caltur): USD 95.
Trekking on the ice: a globally unique experience. Mini-Trek (2h on ice) with Hielo y Aventura: USD 165, includes boat, crampons, guide. Ages 8-65. Big Ice (4h on ice): USD 270, climbs the upper part of the glacier. Ages 18-50. Book 30-60 days out at hieloyaventura.com (sells out in January).
El Calafate lodging: Hospedaje Lupama (hostel) USD 18 dorm bed. Posada Larsen USD 70 private. Hotel Esplendor by Wyndham USD 160. Recommended restaurants: La Tablita (parrilla, USD 35 main), Mi Rancho (Patagonian lamb, USD 45). Mandatory breakfast at Borges & Álvarez (USD 10).
Lago Roca: alternative activity in El Calafate, 50km from town. 5km hike to a viewpoint over Lago Argentino. Practically empty. Worth a day with a rental car (AR$ 80,000/USD 67).
El Chaltén: trekking capital
TL;DREl Chaltén has 2,500 residents, was founded in 1985 to mark the Chilean border and became South America's trekking mecca. No park entry fee. Laguna de los Tres trail (Fitz Roy) 24km round trip, 8-10h, intermediate-hard. Cerro Torre 22km, 6-8h. El Calafate → El Chaltén bus CalTur USD 16, 3h, departs 8am and 6pm.
El Chaltén is a world reference for trekking. 30 hostels, 10 restaurants and 200km of trails starting from the main street. Park entry is free (rare in Argentina) — you leave the hostel straight onto the trail.
Laguna de los Tres trail (Fitz Roy): the photo you want to take home. 24km round trip (starting from downtown El Chaltén), 850m elevation, 8-10h. The last km has a steep 400m climb on moraine — knee killer. The view of the lagoon with Fitz Roy reflected: insane on a clear day. Probability of a clear day in January: 40%.
Cerro Torre trail (Laguna Torre): 22km round trip, 600m elevation, 6-8h. Easier than Fitz Roy. Cerro Torre is the world's most technical mountain (Cesare Maestri 1959, Casarotto 1979).
Pliegue Tumbado trail: 17km round trip, 1,000m elevation, 6h. Panoramic viewpoint of Fitz Roy + Cerro Torre + Glaciar Viedma. Less crowded.
El Chaltén lodging: Rancho Grande Hostel USD 20 bed, Aires del Fitz Roy USD 56 private, Hostería Senderos USD 120. Restaurants: La Tapera (grilled lamb USD 40), Patagonicus (pizza USD 18), La Cervecería (Bonifacio craft beer + locro USD 14).
Logistics: unreliable wifi (Starlink since 2024 but spotty), ATMs are rare and often empty, bring AR$ or USD cash. Self-service laundry at Albergue Patagonia.

Argentina → Chile crossing: the complicated border
TL;DRTo go from El Chaltén/El Calafate to Torres del Paine you cross at Paso Cerro Castillo (Argentina) / Cerro Castillo (Chile). Bus-Sur or Cootra bus El Calafate → Puerto Natales: USD 35, 5-6h including queues. Immigration: 30min-2h depending on the time. Chile bans fresh food, fruit, seeds, honey. Fine USD 250.
The crossing is the itinerary's weak point. El Calafate → Puerto Natales bus (Chilean gateway to Torres del Paine): operated by Bus-Sur, Cootra or Turismo Zaahj. USD 30-40, 5-6h including immigration line at Paso Cerro Castillo. Departs 8am, arrives 2-3pm.
Documents: passport (driver's license is not valid at the Chile border). PDI (Chilean Investigation Police) takes a photo and stamps. No visa for US citizens for up to 90 days.
Forbidden entering Chile: fruit, fresh vegetables, meat (raw or processed), dairy, honey, seeds, plants. On-the-spot fine: USD 250-2,000. Strict enforcement, sniffer dogs. If you have an apple in your pack from El Chaltén, dump it before the border. SAG (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero) inspects.
Currency: arriving in Chile with Argentine pesos? Exchange in Puerto Natales (Cambios Sur, reasonable rate). Some places accept USD, but pay in CLP at restaurants and refugios. 2026 rate: USD 1 ≈ CLP 980. AR$ 1 ≈ CLP 1.2.
Torres del Paine: the 5-day W trek
TL;DRThe W trek is the classic Torres del Paine route: 80km, 5 days, 4 nights. Forms a W passing through Base Las Torres + French Valley + Grey Glacier. Refugios + camping. Mandatory booking 4-6 months out via Vertice Patagonia and Fantástico Sur. Entry CLP 48,500 (USD 49) multi-day. Guided full-board USD 1,800-2,500 or self-guided USD 600-1,000.
The W trek is South America's trekking mecca. 80km, 5 days, 4 nights, traced in a W. Standard itinerary:
| Day | Section | Distance | Hours | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Refugio Central → Base Las Torres out-and-back | 18km | 8h | Central or Chileno |
| 2 | Central → Los Cuernos | 11km | 4h | Los Cuernos |
| 3 | Los Cuernos → French Valley (round trip) → Paine Grande | 26km | 10h | Paine Grande |
| 4 | Paine Grande → Grey Glacier out-and-back | 22km | 8h | Paine Grande or Grey |
| 5 | Paine Grande → Pudeto catamaran → bus Puerto Natales | 1km + transport | 3h | Puerto Natales |
Bookings: Vertice Patagonia refugios (Paine Grande, Grey, Dickson): verticepatagonia.com. Fantástico Sur refugios (Central, Chileno, Los Cuernos, El Frances): fantasticosur.com. Sell out 4-6 months in advance for January-February. Booking in October might catch openings for December.
Refugio costs 2026:
- CONAF camping (free at some spots): check ahead
- Paid camping Vertice/Fantástico: CLP 9,000-15,000/night (USD 9-15)
- Refugio shared room: CLP 35,500/night (USD 36)
- Refugio with breakfast: CLP 65,000 (USD 66)
- Refugio full board (3 meals + bed): CLP 105,000-130,000 (USD 105-130)
Self-guided version (backpacker): 5-day W trek 4 nights refugio shared room + 3 meals/day: USD 600-900. Park entry: USD 49. Bus Puerto Natales-Torres + Paine Grande catamaran: USD 75. Total W experience: USD 800-1,100 per person.
Guided full-board version (Chile Nativo, Vertice, EcoCamp): USD 1,800-2,500 per person, includes transfer, guide, meals, refugio. EcoCamp Patagonia (geodesic domes) costs USD 2,800+ for the W trek.
Park entry 2026: MANDATORY online purchase at pasesparques.cl since December/2025. CLP 32,400 (USD 33) up to 3 days, CLP 48,500 (USD 49) for 3+ days. Download the QR code in Puerto Natales (no signal in the park).
The O Circuit: 8-day full version
TL;DRThe O Circuit is the W trek + the back side of Torres del Paine. 8-10 days, 130km, includes Glaciar Dickson and Paso John Gardner with a top-down view of Grey Glacier. Wilder, less crowded, requires experience. Booking only via Vertice (Dickson, Perros refugios). Cost USD 1,000-1,400 self-guided.
The O Circuit (also called the O Trek) does the full loop: starts at Central, climbs the Ascencio Valley (Base Las Torres), returns to Seron, passes Dickson, climbs Paso John Gardner (1,180m altitude, top-down view of Grey Glacier), descends to Grey, and closes at Paine Grande. 130km in 8-10 days.
Critical differences vs the W:
- 50% fewer people (park caps entries to the O)
- More spartan refugios (Seron, Dickson, Perros, John Gardner — camping or basic shelters)
- Paso John Gardner can close due to wind or snow, ranger decides on the spot — you may be stuck 1 day at Refugio Los Perros
- Requires printed passport for CONAF entrance check-in
Booking: counter-clockwise only since 2024 (CONAF decision to avoid congestion). Vertice Patagonia controls 4 refugios, Fantástico Sur 4. Sells out in June-July for January season.
When the O is worth it over the W: if you have 10+ days in Patagonia, multi-day trekking experience, and want to escape crowds. Otherwise the W is already incredible.
Minimum gear and where to rent
TL;DRYou need a 3-layer rain shell (Gore-Tex or equivalent), broken-in Gore-Tex boots, waterproof pants, fleece, beanie + gloves, 40-60L pack, -5°C bag if camping (refugios are warm, +5°C suffices). Full rental in Puerto Natales: USD 80-120 for 5 days. Don't use a poncho. Don't use sneakers.
REQUIRED gear (CONAF and refugios sometimes check):
- 3-layer rain shell (not poncho, not plastic). Brands: Marmot PreCip USD 100, Patagonia Torrentshell USD 180, or rental USD 5/day
- Waterproof pants (Marmot PreCip Pants USD 80, rental USD 3/day)
- Gore-Tex trekking boots ALREADY BROKEN IN (Salomon X Ultra USD 150, Merrell Moab USD 120). NEVER break them in on this trail — day-1 blister ends the trip
- Mid-weight fleece (200g) + thermal base layer
- Beanie + gloves + buff (even in January, Paso John Gardner at 1,180m is 0°C with wind)
- 40-60L pack with rain cover
- Sleeping bag if camping: -5°C (refugio shared room has a blanket, +5°C is fine). Bag rental USD 6/day
- Trekking poles (recommended, save your knees on descents)
- Headlamp (refugio is dark after 10pm)
- Water filter or tablets (Vertice and Fantástico sell water, but a filter pays off)
- Trail food if self-guided: bars, dried fruit, cheese, salami. Buy at Unimarc supermarket in Puerto Natales (cheaper than the park)
Where to rent in Puerto Natales: Erratic Rock (gold standard, USD 80-120 complete 5-day package), Yaganhouse Gear Rental, Rental Natales. Renting in El Chaltén (Argentina) is also viable.
Full 14-day itinerary: day by day
