Montmartre.
Paris's most cinematic hill — Sacré-Coeur, winding staircases, painter's studios, and honest bistros.
Why stay in Montmartre.
The neighborhood in three honest paragraphs — no tourism brochure.
Montmartre sits on the hill of the 18th arrondissement where Amélie was filmed, where Picasso and Toulouse-Lautrec painted in the cabarets around the Moulin Rouge, and where the white dome of Sacré-Coeur marks the highest point in Paris. No other neighborhood carries this much mythology per square block.
The tourist trap is real — Place du Tertre has surrendered entirely — but Montmartre still has half-empty alleyways, romantic stairways, and working painters' studios. Climb via rue Lepic instead of the main square and you'll find a Paris that hasn't been fully packaged.
Staying in Montmartre is a trade-off: you get atmosphere and scenery in exchange for distance from the center (35 minutes by metro to the Louvre) and unavoidable crowds at the main sights.

How to get here.
Airport, metro, taxi and walkability — with real costs, not brochure prices.
From the airport
Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is 25 km away. Taxi or Uber runs €55–70. RER B to Gare du Nord, transfer to line 4 to Château Rouge: €11.80, about 50 minutes total.
Metro and train
Main stations: Abbesses (line 12), Anvers (line 2), Pigalle (lines 2 and 12). Abbesses is the most scenic — one of the deepest stations in Paris, with a mural-lined staircase.
Taxi and Uber
Uber works well. €12–18 to anywhere in the center. Some Montmartre streets are closed to traffic, so rides end on nearby streets.
On foot
Good within the neighborhood but hilly. To the Marais: 30 minutes by metro. To the Louvre: 25 minutes. To the Eiffel Tower: 35 minutes plus a walk.
