Eixample.
Modernist Barcelona — a perfect grid, Gaudí on every corner, the city's most coveted address.
Why stay in Eixample.
The neighborhood in three honest paragraphs — no tourism brochure.
The Eixample is what urban planner Ildefons Cerdà drew up in the 19th century when Barcelona tore down its old walls: a perfect grid of chamfered blocks, wide boulevards, and inner courtyards. It holds the world's densest concentration of Catalan Modernisme. The Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, and La Pedrera are all here, within a few blocks of each other.
The neighbourhood splits in two. The Dreta de l'Eixample, centred on Passeig de Gràcia, is showcase Barcelona: luxury brands, five-star hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants. The Esquerra and the Gaixample (the LGBTQ+ strip around Carrer del Consell de Cent) carry genuine neighbourhood life — vermouth bars and tapas spots that locals actually use.
Staying in the Eixample means choosing comfort and centrality. Apartments are spacious, hotels occupy grand buildings with tall ceilings, and you walk to everything: 10 minutes to Plaça Catalunya, 15 to the Gothic Quarter, 12 to the Sagrada Família. The most liveable base in Barcelona, without the tourist crush of the Rambla.

How to get here.
Airport, metro, taxi and walkability — with real costs, not brochure prices.
From the airport
From El Prat Airport (BCN), the Eixample is 15 km away. The Aerobús costs €5.90 to Plaça Catalunya (35 min), then 5–10 min on foot. Taxi or Uber runs €30–38, around 25 min without traffic. The R2 Nord commuter train serves Passeig de Gràcia directly (€4.60, 30 min).
Metro and train
Passeig de Gràcia station (L2/L3/L4), Diagonal (L3/L5), and Sagrada Família (L2/L5) all serve the neighbourhood. Passeig de Gràcia connects to Plaça Catalunya in one stop, and to the airport via commuter rail.
Taxi and Uber
Uber, Bolt, and Cabify all work here, alongside the traditional black-and-yellow cab, which is plentiful. Expect €7–12 to the Gothic Quarter, El Born, or Barceloneta.
On foot
Excellent — though the blocks are deceptively large. Plaça Catalunya is 10 min away, the Gothic Quarter 15 min, Sagrada Família 12 min, and Gràcia 12 min uphill. Wide pavements, entirely flat.

When to go.
High season, low season, sweet spot and when to skip. No romanticizing.
High season
May to September. Hotel rates climb 50–90%; book 60+ days out. June (Sónar, Primavera Sound) and August hit the peak.
Low season
January and February. Temperatures of 8–14°C, but the city breathes and prices drop 35–40%. Museums and restaurants without queues.
Sweet spot · Voyspark recommendation
April and October. Around 18–23°C, good light, manageable crowds, mid-range pricing.
Skip if
You can't stand heat and crowds: skip July and August, when the Eixample turns stuffy and rooftop bars overflow.
