The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) costs ¥50,000 (7-day adult, ordinary) in 2026 after the 70% hike of October 2023, when it jumped from ¥29,650 to ¥50,000. It only makes sense for itineraries with 3+ long Shinkansen legs, like Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Tokyo. For short trips (Tokyo-Kyoto return), individual tickets cost ¥28,340 and come out cheaper. Alternatives: IC card (Suica/Pasmo), Kansai Thru Pass, and regional passes.

The JR Pass has become a hype trap. For decades it was the magic tourist tool in Japan: buy at home, activate on arrival, ride all you want on Japan Railways trains. There was a "in Japan you buy the JR Pass" mystique.

In October 2023 the pass got 70% more expensive overnight. ¥29,650 became ¥50,000. Anyone running the numbers saw it fast: many routes that justified a JR Pass no longer did. People who copy-pasted advice from 2019 blogs bought one and lost money.

This guide breaks down the real math in 2026. When it works, when it doesn't, and alternatives that nobody promotes but that save $130-270 per person.

What the JR Pass is and what changed in 2023-2024

The JR Pass is an unlimited Japan Railways rail pass (network covering Shinkansen and regional trains) for 7, 14 or 21 days. In October 2023 it went from ¥29,650 to ¥50,000 (7-day ordinary, +70%). Since 2024 it includes Nozomi and Mizuho trains with an extra fee of ¥4,180-8,360 per ride.

The JR Pass covers 6 main operators (JR East, West, Central, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku) plus specific ferries and selected buses. It doesn't cover municipal subways (Tokyo Metro, Toei, Osaka Metro), private railways (Hankyu, Hanshin, Kintetsu, Odakyu) or fastest Shinkansen (Nozomi, Mizuho) without surcharge.

2026 table (price purchased outside Japan, ordinary class):

Duration Adult Child 6-11
7 days ¥50,000 ¥25,000
14 days ¥80,000 ¥40,000
21 days ¥100,000 ¥50,000

Green Car (first class): ¥70,000 / ¥110,000 / ¥140,000.

Since October 2023 you can also buy it inside Japan, but it costs ¥1,000-5,000 more.

When the JR Pass still makes sense

A 7-day JR Pass pays off if you do at least 3 long Shinkansen legs in 1 week, like Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Tokyo. For these routes, individual ticket total exceeds ¥50,000 and the Pass saves ¥10,000-25,000.

Route Tickets JR Pass 7d Worth it?
Tokyo→Kyoto→Hiroshima→Tokyo ¥56,560 ¥50,000 Yes
Tokyo→Kyoto→Osaka→Tokyo ¥41,730 ¥50,000 No
Tokyo→Hokkaido→Tokyo ¥48,000 ¥50,000 Tie
Osaka→Hiroshima→Hakata→Osaka ¥34,660 ¥50,000 No
Tokyo→Kyoto round trip ¥28,340 ¥50,000 No

Rule of thumb: add Shinkansen leg costs + regional rides (Yamanote in Tokyo, JR Kyoto-Osaka, etc.) + JR ferries. If total > ¥50,000, JR Pass works.

For 14 days, ¥80,000 pays off if you run Tokyo-Hokkaido-Kanazawa-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Tokyo (classic Grand Tour).

Suica and Pasmo IC card: the daily wildcard

Suica (JR East) and Pasmo (Tokyo metro) are prepaid tap-and-go cards for any transport in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and metropolitan regions. Top up at machines with cash or card. Balance also works in convenience stores, vending machines.

Where it works: practically all urban Japan. Tokyo Metro, Toei, JR Yamanote, Osaka Metro, Kyoto Bus, Kintetsu, Hankyu. Also Sapporo, Fukuoka, Hiroshima.

Limit: doesn't work on long-distance Shinkansen.

Suica Welcome (launched 2024 for tourists): physical card, 28-day validity, no ¥500 deposit. Buy at Narita or Haneda on arrival.

Apple Wallet and Google Pay: US/EU travelers with iPhone can add Suica directly to Wallet (no physical card needed). Top up with Apple Pay using an international card.

Regional passes nobody talks about

Pass Coverage 3 days 5 days 7 days
Kansai Thru Pass Private Kansai ¥5,600 ¥7,000
JR West Kansai Pass JR Kansai ¥6,800 ¥10,000
JR West Kansai Wide Pass Extended Kansai ¥12,000
JR Hokkaido Pass All Hokkaido ¥21,000 ¥27,000
JR Kyushu Pass South South Kyushu ¥10,000
JR East Tohoku Pass Tohoku + Tokyo ¥30,000
Hakone Free Pass Hakone ¥6,100

The Kansai Thru Pass covers 35 private railways + Osaka/Kyoto subway + buses + Kobe. The only one covering Hankyu, Hanshin, Kintetsu.

JR West Kansai Wide Pass includes Shinkansen Osaka-Okayama and even Kinosaki Onsen.

How to decide: decision tree

  1. Tokyo only or Kyoto only: IC card (¥3,000 initial top-up) + point tickets. Total 7-day cost: ¥4,000-8,000.
  2. Tokyo + Hakone or Nikko day trip: IC card + Hakone Free Pass (¥6,100) or Nikko Pass (¥4,150). Don't buy JR Pass.
  3. Kyoto + Osaka + Nara: Kansai Thru Pass 3 days (¥5,600) + IC card. Skip JR Pass.
  4. Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka (7-day Golden Route): individual Shinkansen tickets (¥28,340 round trip) + IC cards. Skip JR Pass.
  5. Tokyo + Kyoto + Hiroshima + Miyajima (classic 7-10 days): JR Pass 7 days (¥50,000) wins.
  6. Tokyo + Hokkaido + Kanazawa + Kyoto + Hiroshima (Grand Tour 14 days): JR Pass 14 days (¥80,000) wins big.
  7. Round-trip flight + 3-5 days in one city: IC card + individual tickets.

Saving without a JR Pass

Platt Kodama: promotional tickets on slower Kodama trains, sold by JR Tokai Tours. Tokyo-Osaka ¥10,700 (vs ¥14,720 Nozomi). Buy 1+ day ahead at the station.

Willer Express: night bus between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka. ¥4,000-8,000, 7-9h overnight, saves a hotel night.

Domestic LCCs: Peach, Jetstar Japan, Skymark fly Tokyo-Osaka, Tokyo-Sapporo, Tokyo-Fukuoka for ¥5,000-12,000.

Common expensive mistakes

  1. Buying JR Pass automatically because "every blog recommends it" — ¥50,000 thrown away on half the trips
  2. Activating JR Pass on day 1 (jet lag) without traveling — lose a full day of validity
  3. Boarding Nozomi without knowing the surcharge — agent charges ¥4,180-8,360 in surprise
  4. Buying standard Suica instead of Welcome — ¥500 deposit only refundable with bureaucracy
  5. Thinking JR Pass covers Tokyo subway — it doesn't cover Tokyo Metro or Toei, only JR Yamanote

Practical appendix

  • Where to buy JR Pass: official site japanrailpass.net or agencies (Klook, Voyagin, JTB), 1-3 months ahead
  • Activation: at JR counter at any major station (Narita, Haneda, Tokyo Station, Kyoto Station), with passport
  • Validity: starts on activation date, counts consecutive days
  • Seat reservation: free at any JR counter, do 1-2 days before in peak season (Golden Week, Obon, New Year)
  • Essential apps: Navitime Japan Travel (routes), Google Maps (now fixed for Japan), EX-IC or SmartEX
  • Japan visa: US, Canadian, UK, Australian and most EU passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days
  • Cash: 7-Eleven ATMs accept international cards with no extra fee; FamilyMart too
  • Plug: type A/B (US-style), 100V
  • Flight JFK/LAX-NRT/HND: direct flights exist on ANA, JAL, United, Delta, American. 13-14h. $900-2,000 round trip in 2026.

The Portuguese Passport in 2026 — the complete visa-free country list, the map of Europe, and what EU citizenship actually changes

The Portuguese passport is one of the strongest on earth: top 5 on the Henley Index, with access to nearly 190 destinations without a prior visa. But the stamp count is the least of it. What makes the document extraordinary is the European Union citizenship baked into it, the right to live, work, and study across 27 countries. This guide breaks down the full visa-free list by region, explains ETIAS and ESTA, walks through how to obtain the passport by descent or residency, and compares it honestly against a standard U.S. passport.

Thailand Visa in 2026 — The Honest Guide for Americans (60-Day Visa Exemption, TDAC, e-Visa, and the DTV)

Americans don't need a visa for tourism in Thailand, and since July 2024 they can stay up to 60 days per entry, up from the old 30. Inside the country you can stretch that another 30. The paper TM6 card is dead: every traveler now files the TDAC, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, online and free, within 72 hours of arrival. This guide covers who's exempt, how to fill out the TDAC without getting scammed, when you actually need an e-Visa or the new DTV for remote workers, and the mistakes that stall travelers in the Bangkok immigration line.

UAE Visa in 2026 — the honest guide for U.S. travelers (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the free 30-day stamp, the e-Visa, and the laws that catch tourists off guard)

U.S. citizens don't need to file a visa before flying to the United Arab Emirates. You get a free visa-on-arrival stamp valid for 30 days when you land in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, extendable for another 30 with a fee. It's a real exemption, and it still holds in 2026. But the rule depends on your passport — some nationalities get 90 days, others must buy a paid e-Visa, and a few depend on hotel or airline sponsorship. This guide shows who's exempt, who needs a visa, what it costs, and the local laws on alcohol, medication, and conduct that catch unprepared visitors.
