Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey premieres on July 17, 2026, filmed in Pylos, Cape Sounion, Ithaca, Sicily, and Morocco. The Peloponnese is still the Greece that Santorini is no longer: empty, authentic, cheap. Those who go between March and May will find pre-frenzy prices and tavernas without queues. After July, the magic ends.

Christopher Nolan is making The Odyssey. Premieres July 17, 2026, IMAX 70mm, $250 million budget, and the cast is absurd: Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o. Universal released the first images in February 2026. The frenzy will start before the film premieres — and it will hit the Peloponnese hard.
The production filmed in four countries between March and December 2025: Sicily (Cyclops sea scenes), Morocco (Essaouira became King Alcinous's palace), Italy (Castello Aragonese in Ischia), and Greece. In Greece, the locations were surgical: Pylos and the Palace of Nestor in Messenia, the island of Ithaca, and Cape Sounion (the temple of Poseidon that Damon's Odysseus looks at in the first teaser).
What this means for you: the Peloponnese, which until now was the Greece no one went to, will become mass set-jetting. Those booking for July-August 2026 are already paying peak inflated prices. Those who go between March and early June will still find the place as it always was — empty, slow, with tavernas serving grilled octopus for €14 and owners who sit at your table to chat.
Why The Odyssey Will Blow Up the Peloponnese
Nolan is not just any director. Tenet brought 380,000 additional tourists to the Amalfi coast in 2021. Oppenheimer turned Los Alamos into a pilgrimage destination. Dunkirk multiplied searches for the French city sixfold in the six months post-release. With Odyssey, the multiplier will be greater because the theme is Greek mythology — a subject that already has a structured fandom (Percy Jackson, Madeline Miller, Stephen Fry).
The difference this time is that the set is an entire country. The Greek National Tourism Organization estimated in an April/26 report that the film should bring 2.1 million extra tourists to Greece between July/26 and December/27. Santorini and Mykonos are already saturated. The overflow will go to the Peloponnese, which has limited hotel capacity.
Reservations at Costa Navarino (resort where Universal housed part of the team) are 78% booked for August/26 according to the hotel's own data. In January/26 they were at 41%. There's nothing to be done: the Nolan effect is real, measurable, and has already started.
Travel Window: Why Go Before June
May is the perfect month. Temperature between 22-28°C, sea starting to warm up (19-21°C), vegetation still green from winter, low occupancy. June starts to heat up (28-33°C) and prices already rise 30-40%. July-August is an oven (35-40°C) with peak prices and full occupancy.
Price comparison for a couple, 7 nights, SP-Athens flight + car + 4-star hotels:
| Period | Flight (couple) | Hotels | Car | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 2026 | R$ 11,600 | €1,400 | €280 | R$ 22,500 |
| June 2026 | R$ 14,200 | €2,100 | €420 | R$ 30,800 |
| July 2026 | R$ 22,800 | €3,400 | €630 | R$ 47,200 |
| September 2026 | R$ 16,500 | €2,600 | €490 | R$ 35,900 |
September remains a decent option post-premiere, but the cinephile crowd will already be there. October is calm again but many peninsula hotels close after 10/15.
7-Day Itinerary: Complete Peloponnese
Day 1 — Athens (arrival). Land in the morning, drop bags at a hotel in Plaka or Koukaki. Afternoon at the National Archaeological Museum (Mycenaean room is essential to contextualize what you'll see later). Dinner at Diporto (taverna without a sign, Sokratous 9, house wine served in a copper jug).
Day 2 — Athens → Nafplio (140 km, 2h). Pick up the car in the morning, stop at Cape Sounion (temple of Poseidon, filmed by Nolan, entry €10). Arrive in Nafplio at lunchtime. City was the first capital of modern Greece, Venetian architecture, marble-paved streets. Climb to Palamidi (913 steps) in the late afternoon when the sun is low. Dinner at Aiolos Tavern.
Day 3 — Nafplio → Mystras → Sparta → Mani (180 km). Mystras is UNESCO Byzantine, a ghost town from the 13th century on a mountainside. Reserve at least 3 hours. Modern Sparta is not worth a long stop (ordinary city, no significant ruins). Head to Mani Peninsula — stone landscape, medieval towers (the Maniots built fortress towers to wage war between families). Sleep in Areopoli or Limeni.
Day 4 — Mani → Pylos (130 km). Free morning in Mani (go to Cape Tenaro, the southernmost point of mainland Europe, where mythology says the entrance to Hades was). Afternoon driving along the west coast to Pylos. Beautiful bay city, Venetian fortress, and the Palace of Nestor is 17 km inland — the real Mycenaean site where Nolan filmed Telemachus arriving in search of his father. Entry €6.
Day 5 — Pylos / Costa Navarino. Rest day. Enjoy Voidokilia beach (perfect omega shape, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe). If budget allows, lunch at The Romanos (Marriott resort in Costa Navarino, where Nolan stayed). Dinner in Pylos at Gregos (fresh fish, €30/person).
Day 6 — Pylos → Methoni → Olympia (120 km). Methoni has the seaside Venetian fortress (entry €4, go early). Lunch in Pylos before continuing. Olympia is the site of the ancient Olympic games, 776 BC. Visit in the late afternoon when cruise buses have left. Archaeological Museum of Olympia is better than the site itself — don't skip.
Day 7 — Olympia → Nemea → Athens (280 km). Long but strategic return. Stop in Nemea (50 min from Olympia going straight). Visit wineries: Domaine Skouras, Gaia Estate, Lafkiotis. Tasting €15-25/person. Buy 4-6 bottles of Agiorgitiko (€8-15 each) to bring back. Arrive in Athens late afternoon. Return flight on day 8.

Hotels: Boutique vs Resort
Boutique (Voyspark recommends):
- Nafplio: Amphitryon Hotel (€180/night May) — facing Bourtzi fortress, breakfast on the balcony over the sea.
- Mani: Itilo Traditional Guesthouse (€95/night) — authentic stone, owner Eleni cooks dinner by reservation (€22 with wine).
- Pylos: Karalis Beach Hotel (€140/night) — small boutique, pool over cliff.
- Olympia: Hotel Pelops (€85/night) — Greek family, simple, perfect.
Resort (if you want to walk where Nolan walked):
- The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort (Costa Navarino) — €420/night May, €890/night August. Anazoe Spa, golf, private beach. The production team stayed here in June/25. Worth 1 night, not the whole week.
- W Costa Navarino — €380/night May. Younger, modern design, close to the Romanos.
Food and Wine: What to Eat, Where
Peloponnese cuisine is different from the islands. More meat (goat is a specialty), strong Kalamata olive oil, goat cheeses (graviera, mizithra), and red wine that no one talks about (but should).
Must-try dishes:
- Kleftiko — goat roasted in a clay oven with potatoes and herbs. Mani specialty.
- Hilopites with goat — homemade ribbon pasta, goat sauce.
- Grilled octopus in Pylos — local catch, €14-18 in a decent taverna.
- Loukoumades — fried dough balls with honey, universal Greek dessert.
Wines to look for:
- Agiorgitiko (Nemea) — full-bodied, fruity red. Greek version of Cabernet.
- Moscofilero (Mantinia) — aromatic white, unique to the Peloponnese.
- Mavrodaphne (Patras) — sweet dessert red, unique in the world.

Set-jetting: For Those Going for the Film
If you're going specifically for the film, the itinerary changes. Focus on real filmed locations:
| Location | Scene/Context | How to Visit |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Sounion | Temple of Poseidon, first teaser | Day-trip from Athens, 1h30 by car |
| Palace of Nestor (Pylos) | Telemachus arriving | Entry €6, 2h visit |
| Ithaca | Odysseus's home | Ferry from Patras (4h) or Kefalonia |
| Coast of Methoni | Sailing scenes | Day-trip from Pylos |
Ithaca requires extra logistics — it's outside the main Peloponnese circuit. Adds 2 days to the itinerary and costs €350-500 extra per person. Worth it if you're a hardcore cinephile. Not worth it if you just want to "see Greece". For more on planning trips based on 2026 films/series, read Set-jetting 2026: Series and Films That Will Define Destinations.
What NOT to Do
- Don't go in July or August. Seriously. You'll pay double to fight for a table in a taverna.
- Don't try to do the Peloponnese by bus. KTEL exists but is torture. Car is mandatory.
- Don't skip Mystras. Every Brazilian skips it because "it's just ruins". Mystras is UNESCO, it's a Byzantine church painted inside, it's the memory of fallen Constantinople.
- Don't buy ceramics in central Athens shops. Everything is made in China. Buy directly in Nemea or Pylos from local artisans.
- Don't trust "Greek salad" from tourist restaurants. Real Greek salad has tomato, cucumber, onion, olive, whole feta cheese on top. No lettuce. Whoever serves lettuce is charging a tourist.
Practical Appendix
- Recommended Flight: Lufthansa SP-Athens via Frankfurt, ~14h total. Book 90+ days in advance via Skyscanner or Google Flights.
- Car: Discover Cars, pick up at Athens Airport, return at Athens Airport. Economy €35/day May.
- Travel Insurance: mandatory €40/EUR minimum coverage. Use World Nomads or Visa Infinite card.
- Visa: Brazilians don't need one for Greece (Schengen, 90 days). ETIAS starts in October/26, not required in May.
- Card: Eurozone accepts Visa/Master easily. Carry €200 cash for small tavernas.
- Language: English works in Athens and hotels. Outside, download Google Translate offline Greek.
- Emergency: 112 (general European), 100 (Greek tourist police, speak English).
